What to Know About Depression in Cats? 2024

B. Oscar

Unfortunately, depression is not a disease reserved for humans. Cats can also be victims, at any age. And just like in humans, depression in cats is difficult to treat. Thus, it is almost always fatal for our feline friends

Depression, what is it?

Depression is a mental illness that has the effect of affecting the cat in depth, plunging it into a deep malaise from which it cannot come out. There are many causes of depression in cats.

Too early separation from the mother is one of the main causes of depression in cats. The mother did not have time to teach her kitten how to become a balanced adult cat. The latter therefore does not have all the necessary weapons to face the world around him.

A too severe or often absent human can also be the cause of the onset of depression in cats. In this case, the animal feels alone and abandoned.

Finally, a sudden change in the cat’s environment (moving house, arrival of a new member in the family, death, etc.) or a traumatic event (accident, fight, etc.) can also cause depression.

Symptoms of depression in cats

If you observe one or more of the symptoms below in your cat, do not hesitate to consult a veterinarian:

  • a sudden loss of appetite or, conversely, bulimia
  • a sudden change in behavior, such as aggression
  • urine markings
  • excessive grooming or, conversely, no grooming
  • a lack of enthusiasm for the game and/or outings, or even apathy
  • insomnia
  • great fatigue
  • bad smells
  • self-mutilation

Treatments for depression in cats

Depending on the level of intensity of the disease, the cat has more or less chance of getting out of it. Indeed, the less the disease is developed, the more it is possible to restore the taste of life to his hairball. However, we must act quickly.

Indeed, this disease is fatal for 99% of cats that are affected. The objective is therefore above all to give him more attention than usual and to stimulate him on a daily basis, especially through play. The cat must absolutely feel that he is not alone.

Thus, it is highly recommended not only to spend more time with your cat but also to find tips to prevent it from getting bored when it finds itself alone at home. Investing in a cat tree, catnip, hiding treats in each room or even opting for a Pipolino are all ways to entertain your cat in his absence.

On the other hand, if the disease has already reached an advanced stage, it can be difficult for the cat to get out of this lethargic state. Many felines unfortunately prefer to let themselves wither and starve, life no longer having any meaning…

However, the veterinarian may decide to set up a treatment with antidepressants in order to reduce the effects of depression. But beware, this kind of treatment can have serious consequences on the health of the cat, especially on its liver.
